Photographer Profile
<& /gallery/jkliman.tmp &> Jeffrey Kliman: Women in Jazz

For the past 6 years, I have photographed Jazz at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The various programs have included "Dr. Billy Taylor presents Jazz at the Kennedy Center, the Mary Lou Williams "Women In Jazz" Festival & the Betty Carter Residency program" Jazz Ahead". This gallery showing of my images of Women In Jazz came from these years shooting women jazz artists in these different venues. I prefer to work within the rehearsals & soundchecks more than the performance. I am interested in creating images that reveal some intimacy; images that allow the viewer to see Jazz as it is being created & worked on . What has added to my joy as a photographer of Jazz is in meeting & hearing all these incredible Women Artists. "These chicks have chops!!!"

NOTE: My Feminist wife Donna has sanctioned the use of this phrase for its relevancy. I am not allowed to use the word "Chicks" anyplace else.

Claire Daly / Baritone: I first heard Clair playing bari at this year's Women in Jazz Fest. This image is from a portrait session done @ Claire's studio for her current headshot.

Shelia Jordon / Vocalist-Singer-Artist: the wonderfully expressive & ever young Shelia Jordon, working with Steve Kuhn in rehearsal.

Roberta Piket/ Pianist: this is a wonderful example of candid-portraiture -- a non-posed moment of Roberta at the piano.

Jane Ira Bloom/ Soprano Sax: Not every performance shot needs to be a " blowin' " shot. Listening is as joyful as playing.

Murian Sullivan / Bassist: a rehearsal room, a pensive moment, a little innovative lighting that resulted in an attractive portrait of a young jazz artist.

Mellisa Slocum / Bassist: After watching Melissa play her bass, I told her the last time I saw anyone attack a bass so purposely, it was Charlie Mingus! She blushed & thanked me.

Anat Cohen / Tenor sax: One of the great perks of photographing the WIJ fest is meeting new players . Anat is an Isreali now living in (where else!) Brooklyn. This was a very private moment where "being unobtrusive" was the key.

Betty Carter / Singer-Teacher-Icon: the year Betty moved her residency program "Jazz Ahead" to the Kennedy Center was sadly the same year she passed away. I got to spend three days photographing Ms. Carter & her student in rehearsal, soundchecks & performance. It was an incredible experience to be witness to her style of teaching...it was a tough love approach ...with the emphasis on the love. & bringing out the best of each student. Michel Portal
