Marc Cary: For the Love of Abbey
Marc Cary è uno dei massimi pianisti della sua generazione ma i progetti da leader che ha realizzato, a partire da Cary On -suo debutto del 1995- fino alle produzioni col Focus Trio, non hanno avuto i riconoscimenti che meritavano.
Le cose sembrano andare diversamente per questo suo debutto in solo, che sta ottenendo ampia risonanza per la riflessiva profondità e la tecnica da concertista che emerge in ogni brano. Il disco è dedicato ad Abbey Lincoln, la grande cantante scomparsa nel 2010, che Cary ha accompagnato per circa 12 anni e che ora omaggia interpretando le sue composizioni.

"La sua musica, anche se priva dei testi, è davvero possente -dice Cary- Ci tenevo molto a divulgarla, soprattutto per quelli che non l'hanno mai ascoltata. La gente ha tante opinioni sul suo modo di cantare ma io credo che ogni cosa si unisce tramite le sue composizioni. Queste riuscivano davvero a descrivere quello che Abbey sentiva."
Eccetto un tema di Duke Ellington, "Melancholia" e due brani originali, Cary si concentra sulle composizioni della Lincoln, stando molto attento a rispettarne l'identità. Dopo una prima session, effettuata nel febbraio 2012, di cui non era soddisfatto, il pianista ha voluto reincidere il disco in maggio, entrando in sala d'incisione senza alcun progetto e seguendo solo il filo della propria ispirazione.

Sono brani che Cary conosce bene, grazie alla lunga collaborazione con la cantante, e l'intensità con cui rilegge il materiale è palpabile. Il pianista evoca quella profondità espressiva che è propria dei grandi interpreti: lo stile orchestrale, il tocco percussivo e la pregnanza delle dinamiche ritmiche si legano alla dimensione cantabile, facendo venire in mente Randy Weston o Abdullah Ibrahim.

Difficile scegliere tra i brani o separarli uno dall'altro: For the Love of Abbey è un concept album coerente e avvincente dall'inizio alla fine.
