Biography

Born: March, 1981

Growing up in New Jersey, Evan Cobb’s musical studies were encouraged from an early age. After years of training on the piano and singing in choirs, Evan began playing the oboe at his father’s behest and progressed quickly. While playing in numerous high school merit ensembles in the Northeast, Evan also started the saxophone and found his interest in jazz.

At Northwestern University, Evan studied oboe performance as his major and also earned a Certificate in jazz studies. The structure of a formal music training was quite helpful and at times entertaining for the young musician. Evan’s oboe studies included Ray Still, Alex Klein, Michael Henoch, Elaine Douvas, and Joseph Robinson; while jazz studies included Michael Kocour and Greg Fishman.

In the Fall of 2000, ‘Young’ Cobb formed the Crime Jazz band Buddha’s Belly. Based in Chicago, the band played hundreds of shows over 6 years, headlining venues like Chicago’s House of Blues and touring on both the east and west coasts. After sharing the stage with acts such as Umphrey’s Mcgee, Virginia Coalition, and Rachael Yamagata, Buddha’s Belly was nominated as a finalist for Best New Entertainer in the Chicago Music Awards of 2005.

When Buddha’s Belly disbanded to pursue other interests, Evan headed back to the east coast to attend SUNY Purchase for graduate studies in jazz. After two years of studying with terrific teachers like Eric Alexander, Todd Coolman, Jon Faddis, Grant Stewart, Ralph Lalama, John Riley, Steve Wilson, and Javon Jackson, Evan received his Master’s Degree.
