I am trying to find an album called "Historic Jazz Concert at Music Inn" There were several albums done at location during that period, but this particular one is on the Atlantic label and the catalog number is 1298. What I remember most is an arrangement of "Body and Soul" that featured Ray Brown and Oscar Pettiford. I lost the album in 1966 during some military travel. I have been trying to find it ever since. I hope that you and/or some of your readers can help. By the way, I think that AAJ is one of the best things that has happened to jazz in many years.

Tommie:

From what little information I've found this LP sounds very interesting. Unfortunately, it's long out of print and hasn't been reissued on CD, the kind of thing that likely turns up only on auction lists. So far, I've come up empty. Keep an eye on euclidrecords.com, and gemm.com, though there are others I haven't run across which could have it.

How or where can I find John Mclaughlin's 'My Goals Beyond'? I have searched countless record stores, tried purchasing it on Amazon, searched the Rykodisc website, which this album is supposed to be on and it is not there. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

George:

John McLaughlin's 'My Goals Beyond' evidently began life as a Columbia LP, was reissued as a Rykodisc CD, and is currently available on the Knitting Factory label. CD Now is among the web sites that offer it.

Do you know where I could find a listing on Beverly Kenney, jazz-oriented vocalist of the 1955-1960 period. She had albums on the Roost and Decca labels. She was born in Harrison, NJ in 1932. Thanks for any information as to CD availability or just biographical info.

John: The All Music Guide site has a bio and a list of her recordings, none of which seem to have been reissued on CD:

B>Where can I find Bill Cosby's CD: Hello Friend, to Ennis with Love?

Obi:

There should be oodles of copies of this CD available through used CD outlets. Start with half.com, secondspin.com, and euclidrecords.com. You should find it within a week, easy.

Chris Harrison of Miami, FL wrote:

I am VERY new to Jazz period. Recently I heard a new release (within the last three months) where the artist was doing some covers of some 70's rock/pop hits. For example I believe there was a cover of a Stevie Wonder song on the album, but I'm not sure. I know it was a new release in 2002, and I know it was released between February and end of April. Any ideas on what or who I heard?

Chris:

Unfortunately, there have been a number of jazz artists who have recorded '70s pop hits (with mixed results) and songs by Stevie Wonder. Among recent releases, there's Kevin Mahogany's Pride and Joy (all old Motown hits), Nnenna Freelon's Tales of Wonder (all Stevie Wonder songs), and Laura Martier's Intersection (a mixed bag of various pop tunes, but none by Stevie Wonder). So it's hard to give you a better answer without more information.

Leo Teuter from Frankfurt, Germany wrote:

Are there more CDs of Howard Johnson released than Gravity!!! and how can I get them over the net? In Germany you have to be lucky to get Gravity!!!

Leo:

A follow up CD by Howard Johnson & Gravity, Right Now, is currently available on line from CDNow and other sites as well.

Drey Samuelson from Washington, DC wrote:

I'm having a very difficult time locating two CDs by Sidsel Endresen: Duplex Ride and Undertow. Can you give me any suggestions where (in the U.S., I mean) someone can purchase these two CDs?

Drey:

Although her two ECM CDs are available through CD Now, Duplex Ride is an import available from actmusic.com. I haven't found any information about the singer's CD Undertow.

Steve G. from West New York, NJ wrote:

I've been hunting down a copy (preferably CD) of Count Basie's "Chairman of the Board," and for the life of me can't understand why this album, touted as one of his best New Testament albums, is so elusive. Any insights, leads, etc. Has it ever been issued on CD?

Steve:

The reason may be one of economics. Basie recorded at least 17 different LPs, not counting anthologies and appearances of tracks on various artists compilations, for Roulette, and EMI, which owns the Roulette masters, generally reissues a title every year or two. 'Chairman of the Board' has never been reissued on CD to my knowledge, but it is a matter of time before that happens. It appeared as a part of the limited edition (but now out of print) Mosaic boxed set 'The Complete Roulette Studio Count Basie.'

Esther Coupal from Anacortes, WA wrote:

I just bought a CD by Celine Dion and she has recorded the song "At Last." Who was the original artist and is it still available?

Esther:

Although there are a number of songs titled "At Last," Celine Dion recorded the one that is likely not only the oldest but the best known. It is impossible for me to say who was the first to record it, though it was first recorded some time in the 1930s or 1940s. Among the earliest recordings are versions by Glenn Miller, a big band leader, and Doris Day (yes, the movie actress).

It's too bad more popular singers don't follow Celine Dion's lead in finding such treasures to record!

Henry Halem from Kent, OH wrote:

I've been trying to find a reissue of Lionel Hampton, Vol. 1 Hot Mallets original issued RCA Bluebird 1937-39. I searched many sources on the net and came up with Sam Goody but they list it as unavailable. Is it indeed out of print?

Henry:

I'm afraid that BMG/RCA deleted almost all, if not all, of its Bluebird reissues from the late 1980s and early 1990s. You should be able to find a used copy through one of the following sites: euclidrecords.com, half.com, secondspin.com, gemm.com.

Since the Hampton CD reissues only covered part of the material, I went back and bought the comprehensive 6 LP boxed set., The Complete Lionel Hampton 1937-1941.
