Sharon Minemoto: Dark Night, Bright Stars
ByThe opening track, "As Luck Would Have It," showcases the band's virtuosity and flexibilityan extended solo from Minemoto features crisp articulation and keyboard command. Bentley's tenor saxophone approach shows solid intonation and relaxed phrasing. The number bounces along with an investigative swing. The title track, "Dark Night, Bright Stars," has an intriguing construct filled with new engagement angles. The solo space is shared generously between Minemoto, Bentley and Radtke, each with an open-ended spirit of inquiry.
Playing jazz has tended to be an occasion where collaborative efforts lead to unique and dynamic musical interactions. These four players have been engaged in these activities since their days in college; they can call on deep creative resources to tell a story of any composition. So, "Supermoon" falls into that aesthetic as the band develops phrases that amplify without any excess weight. "For Bob Murphy" serves as a tribute to the Vancouver pianist Bob Murphy. Solo piano pieces often provide a deep, intimate connection between the artist and the listener. This track is emotionally resonant, beautifully performed, and pays homage to Murphy's legacy through Minemoto's artistry.
"Good Hearts" bubbles along in a straight-ahead fashion bristling with insight and vital energy. Minemoto, Bentley and Radtke deliver solos in an engaging and assertive style. The closing track is entitled "Changes." This is a thoughtful and reflective composition that creates a sense of intimacy between the players and the listener. The special interactions among Minemoto, Bentley and Radtke allow each of them to shine individually while contributing to the group's overall sound.
