Biography:
Tricky is an ex-member of the Wild Bunch. When the band dissolved he, Mushroom and Daddy G formed the well-known Massive Attack. Shortly after Massive Attack's first album was released Tricky launched a solo career. He released his debut single "Aftermath" in 1992 after meeting Martina Topley Bird with whom he worked on all of his solo albums except for the last one, 'Vulnerable' (the vocals in it are of the extraordinary Italian singer and a long-time Tricky fan Costanza Francavilla). Tricky signed a contract to 4th and Broadway in 1994 and "Ponderosa" and "Overcome" were released that same year. At that time he released some material under different names and side projects, too. His debut album "Maxinquaye" (1995) was a great success and entered the UK charts directly at number two. The album used well-known rock samples from the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins to Michael Jackson, recombining them in a new and alluring way.
Throughout 1995 Tricky worked mainly on remixes and released Tricky vs. the Gravediggaz, a collaboration with the American hardcore rap group, as well as a single called "I Be the Prophet" (first released under the name 'Starving Souls'). Most of Tricky's collaborations are collected in the album "Nearly God", released in 1996. At that time he moved to New York and began working with underground rappers. His music grew increasingly dark, yet challenging and inventive. In November 1996 his official second album "Pre-Millennium Tension" was released. It was followed by "Angels with Dirty Faces", revealing Tricky's deep disappointment with the music industry, and "Juxtapose", a collaboration with DJ Muggs from Cypress Hill and DMX's Grease.
Tricky's last album "Vulnerable" is recorded in Los Angelis where he now lives.
