Phil In General

Phil's style of music is very diverse. His ability to transcend genres and styles, and do it very well, is what makes him unique. But sometimes one particular album or concert can be deceiving.

For example, rarely will his solo acoustic concerts be anything like his electric concerts (with Glass Harp or another band) or his releases. So, if you've only been exposed to one of those areas, you could be surprised when you buy an album or go to a concert.

Phil has released such a broad variety of music that it is easy to be initially disappointed with a new CD. So read these reviews, listen to sound samples and preview the CD before you buy it if at all possible so you won't be surprised.

But from my experience, while I may be initially disappointed with a release, I almost always come to enjoy it and always appreciate the musical abilities that have gone into it, even if I'm not fond of the style. Inseparable, for example, took my by surprise. I listened to it a few times and then put it away. It was maybe a year later that I got it out and gave it another spin. And another, and another, etc. While stylisticly, it is still not my favorite, I have certainly come to like and appreciate it for what it is.

So be prepared to be surprised by Phil! I once made the mistake of thinking I'd heard him go in every direction; I was wrong!
