Nel catalogo dell'iperprolifica RareNoise Records ci sono anche gli Slobber Pup, gruppo avant rock che allinea un poker di musicisti più o meno noti ai cultori della scena underground americana. Si tratta dell'organista Jamie Saft, già con i New Zion Trio e collaboratore degli Electric Masada di John Zorn), il bassista Trevor Dunn, anche lui un personaggio che bazzica il pianeta zorniano e con all'attivo band come Melvins, Fantomas, Tomahawk e altre, il chitarrista Joe Morris, uno degli improvvisatori più quotati e apprezzati dalla critica d'oltreoceano e dotato di un timbro abbastanza inconfondibile, e, infine, il batterista Balazs Pandi, anche questa una figura conosciuta da chi frequenta la famiglia del "rumore raro."

Le cinque tracce che compongono Black Aces sono frutto di una seduta in studio del quartetto USA all'insegna della improvvisazione e dell'imprevedibile: un terreno dove Morris dimostra di essere completamente a proprio agio, conducendo come uno sciamano tribali danze blues-metal-jazz che "incendiano" casse, cuffie e auricolari e tutto ciò che capita nei paraggi. Ben supportato da un'altrettanto incendiaria sezione ritmica e dall'ottimo Saft alle tastiere e all'organo Hammond, il cui sound pastoso fa da contraltare al clima iperelettrico che pervade tutto l'album.

Si tratta di un lavoro intenso che non dà un secondo di tregua all'ascoltatore (alla fine del CD si arriva effettivamente un po' esausti) e che può piacere a diversi pubblici: dagli appassionati di avant rock o di metal/hardcore fino ai cultori dell'improvvisazione jazz e ai fan dei Led Zeppelin. Certo, Black Aces non lascia indifferenti e una cavalcata tellurica come "Accuser" (improvvisazione di oltre 27 minuti) ha tutti i requisiti per diventare un piccolo classico del suo genere.
