Born in Rock Island, Illinois in 1962, John knew at the young age of ten
that he wanted to carry on the jazz legacy of his grandfather and father.
Growing up in a musical environment, John developed a deep appreciation for
Jazz.
At the age of 13, John played his first jazz festival performing with his
father's band, Rosie O'grady's Goodtime Jazz Band from Orlando, Fla. One of
the best trombonists anywhere, John's father Bill played an important part
in John's early development. After high school, John moved to Southern
California to work with a young Dixie band, the Jazz Minors, at Disneyland
in Anaheim.
While living in Long Beach, Ca. he became very active in the music scene.
Apart from John's interest in traditional jazz, he ventured into other
musical styles. As a regular member of Dave Wells' Trombone City and
recording with the Los Angeles Jazz Workshop, John's versatility allowed
him many opportunities to perform with big bands and Broadway shows in
addition to Dixieland bands.
In 1986, John returned to Florida to work closer to his father. It was not
too long before John was considered first call for many bands and shows. In
1987 he enthusiastically accepted an offer to join the Woody Herman Young
Thundering Herd as a featured soloist. While with the Herd, John worked
with some of the biggest names in the business like Clark Terry, Stan Getz,
Tony Bennett, and Rosemary Clooney, to name a few. He played hundreds of
clubs and concerts across the United States including Carnegie Hall and the
Kennedy Center.
Following his travels with Woody Herman, John returned to Orlando to persue
other musical objectives. He performed with his father at many jazz
festivals as a duo and also in Bill Allred's Classic Jazz Band, as well as
making solo guest appearances. In 1990 he accepted a spot, on euphonium,
with the famed Mattison-Phillips Tuba-Jazz Consort alongside jazz legend,
Rich Matteson. This group, organized in 1976 and co-lead by famous tubist
Harvey Phillips, recorded
two albums and toured Australia and Switzerland.
In 1993, after the untimely passing of Mattison, the ensemble reorganized
as the Matteson-Phillips Tuba-Jazz Consort Featuring John Allred. The group
plans to record a new album and continue performing clinics and concerts in
the spirit of Rich Matteson. Pardon Our Dust, a CD of John and Rich
performing together (on euphoniums) along with Louie Bellson, Jack
Petersen, Shelly Berg, and Lou Fischer is available on Four Leaf Records.
In 1993 John stepped out on his own, releasing his first solo album, In The
Beginning... on Arbors Records. He has also recorded two CDs in
Switzerland with Marc Jundt's Kalibula Band. His newest release, a CD
called Focused (on AppleJazz Records) features John Allred at his absolute
finest with an astounding group of young musicians. He has many recording
projects in the making including a duet album with his father.
Now freelancing out of Orlando and moving soon to New York City, John is
making his mark on the international jazz scene. Traveling all over the
United States, Europe, Japan, and China, John has played with such names as
Warren Vache, Allan Vache, Ken Peplowski, Jake Hanna, Byron Stripling,
Snooky Young, Ralph Sutton, Dan Barrett, Howard Alden, Major Holley, Ray
Charles, Johnny Mathis, Randy Sandke, Don Menza, Clark Terry, Scott
Hamilton, Buddy Morrow, Red Rodney, Ira Sullivan, Dick Hyman, Milt Hinton,
Bob Haggart, and many more.
John is a UMI (United Musical Instruments) artist and is available for
clinics, concerts, recording work and guest appearances.
