Deanna Witkowski is a versatile pianist/composer/vocalist whose interests
in jazz, classical, and afro-latin musics have enhanced her ever-blossoming
sound.
A recently transplanted New Yorker hailing from Chicago, Witkowski's
musical interests have taken her around the globe, from leading her own trio
in Brussels to teaching and performing in western Kenya, to studying with
Cuban master pianists Chucho Valdés and Hilario Duran in Banff, Alberta
and Toronto. During her tenure in Chicago Witkowski worked regularly in
the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Rob Parton's Jazztech Big Band, and the
all-female sextet SHE.
Since relocating to New York in November 1997 she has toured with the big
band Diva and has studied with pianists Fred Hersch and Sonny Bravo and
with Brazilian drummer Vanderlei Pereira. She also serves as music
director of All Angels' Church for which she has composed or arranged over
thirty works and has written two jazz masses. In May 2000 her quintet will
perfrom at the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival held at the
Kennedy Center. In May 1999 Witkowski was chosen to attend the Banff
International Jazz Workshop led by Kenny Werner. In July 1999 she was
selected as a semifinalist in the Montreux Jazz Festival Piano Solo
Competition; she has also competed in the American Jazz Piano Competition
held in Indianapolis as well as the Jacksonville Jazz Festival's Great American
Jazz Piano Competition in 1998 and 1997 respectively.
