Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) Jazz Award Winner: 2004, 2003, 2002

Forbes Magazine

Forbes designated AAJ as a BEST OF THE WEB site on February 28, 2002. Their review...

Hepcat central. Thousands of album reviews, hundreds of articles by top jazz writers, over 11,000 jazz bios, profiles of new faces and unsung heroes, plus in-depth coverage of top local jazz scenes. Helpful section on essential jazz libraries (excellent Tony Bennett choices, but the Miles picks are debatable). Unusual features like Jazz Uncorked, which recommends pairings of jazz albums with certain wines. Don't miss the no-holds-barred debate on Ken Burns' PBS series ("J'Accuse, Burns and Marsalis!").

BEST: Over 400 extensive interviews, from Sonny Rollins to Joshua Redman.

NPR

Author Loren Schoenberg had this to say about All About Jazz in his recently published book, The NPR Curious Listener's Guide to Jazz.

"All About Jazz (allaboutjazz.com): This site is as good a place you're going to find to keep a handle on what's new in Jazz these days. The level of the writing varies greatly, but there are extended sections on the local Jazz scenes all over the world, and an engaging sense that this site is run by people who actually care about the music and the musicians."

L.A. Times

Here's what Don Heckman of the L.A. Times had to say about AAJ in his March 23, 2000 article Internet Sites in Tune With the Genre...

All About Jazz is a huge site. But the well-organized, visually attractive layout makes it easy to navigate through its many colorful byways. In addition to information about new releases, festivals and tours, there are many more unusual areas: "Gigs From Hell" (with first-person musicians' reminiscences); Desert Island Picks (in which viewers can submit their own lists of what they would take to a desert island); a History of Jazz Timeline; a Guide to Getting Started for neophyte jazz listeners; Jazz Radio, with a list of stations playing jazz, broken out by state; Just for Fun, a grab bag of information about jazz slang, nicknames, musical terms; and All in the Family, a fascinating, longer-than-you-might-expect list of jazz fathers, sons, daughters, brothers, etc.

New York Post

NEW YORK POST designated All About Jazz as one of the top 25 entertainment sites on the web for 1999. Also included were: American Movie Classics, Internet Movie Database, MP3.com, Mr. Showbiz, Salon, Star Trek Continuum and Ticketmaster. (December 1999)

New York Times

June 7, 1998 -- New York Times Article: "(Even) Jazz Makes the Leap to Cyberspace" by Terry Teachout... "Jazz is big -- very big -- on the web. Jazz Central Station and similar enterprises like Jazz Online and All About Jazz are among the 300-odd Web sites devoted to jazz, the number of which is growing daily."

Brill's Content

BRILL'S CONTENT Magazine (the independent voice of the information age) designated All About Jazz as the top jazz site on the web. Also mentioned were Jazz Online, JazzHouse and the Jazz Institute of Chicago. (August 1999)

Mac Review

All About Jazz is organized like a Louis Armstrong solo: It makes perfect sense, has great spirit and leaves you satisfied. Read the November 7, 2000 iReview...

Time Magazine

"A great starting point for the jazz newbie--and a plum resource for serious jazz lovers too..."

Here's what Tom Weber at The Wall Street Journal had to say about AAJ on April 10, 1997...

"All About Jazz: For a fan's perspective on jazz, visit this on-line magazine, where a lineup of contributors post concert and record reviews. Unlike some of the larger, more slickly produced sites, All About Jazz takes time out to have a little fun. A slang dictionary defines such terms as "balloon lungs" (a brass player with a seemingly endless supply of "wind") while a section called Desert Island Picks highlights different fans' lists of must-have recordings."

One of our favorite daily e-zines, had this to say about AAJ on September 15, 1997... "All About Jazz (http://www.allaboutjazz.com/) -- Billed as being "by jazz fans for jazz fans," this is far from a fan site a la those that spring up around television shows or online games. Hip, sharp and clearly in touch with a grassroots audience, the site is hard at work building libraries of interviews, gig reviews, glossaries and storefronts. It's a breeze to navigate and a pleasure to read. The updates are filed each month -- making it easy to keep track. And the alliance with CD Universe makes it easy for fans to lay their hands on the titles they've just read about. Smooth and sincere."

Access Internet Magazine

ACCESS Internet Magazine had this to say about AAJ in their November 1999 issue...

Run by a dedicated collective of jazz enthusiasts, All About Jazz is an amazing resource. There are hundreds of excellent articles and reviews of CDs and concerts. Interviews, bios and profiles give visitors a chance to get to know artists such as Jackie King, Gary Peacock and Sonny Rollins, while On the Road lets users interact with musicians on tour. Before you shuffle off to the next site, check out the Festival Guide.

BBC Online

The British Broadcasting Corporation designated AAJ as one of the top ten music magazines on the web.

"Check out this cool online magazine written for jazz fans by jazz fans. Its content includes some lively articles, reviews on the latest CD's plus a free newsletter. There's also a Site of the week, competitions, a discussion room and items for sale. The design is uncluttered and very easy to pilot."

Billboard

AAJ was mentioned in Steve Traiman's Sites + Sounds article Medium4.com Expands 'Internet-Only TV' on March 21, 2000.

Snap!

Snap! Online had this to say about AAJ on October 15, 1997...

"Created by a group of jazz fanatics, All About Jazz is a Web magazine-locus for anything and everything related to jazz. Although highlighted by an Evolving Time Line that charts the history of jazz, it never becomes too highbrow for its own good. The pages are filled with CD and book reviews, timely profiles, articles, essays and reviews. The All About Jazz editors also include lightweight diversions like the Slang Page: a dictionary that defines the term "freak lips" as "a pair of kissers that wear like leather; one who can hit high C's all night and play a concert the next day." Go Daddy-O!"
