Andrew Cheshire

"A master at conjuring an atmosphere, both in his playing, and his writing" -- CADENCE

Guitarist Andrew Cheshire is a creative and expressive musician who has emerged from the New York jazz scene with a highly original voice in both improvisation, and composition. Scott Yanow, author of Swing and Bebop calls Cheshire " a masterful improviser with a fresh new vocabulary; a talented guitarist who is a bright new voice in 21st century jazz."

Born in Queens, N.Y. in 1962, Andrew began playing the guitar at age 10. Entirely self-taught, Andrew learned how to swing by attending jam sessions at jazz clubs in and around New York City in the late seventies. Andrew has played with such notables as Kenny Barron, Walter Perkins, Don Friedman, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, and Ron McClure. Andrew's music has been praised by musicians and critics alike, winning the "artist deserving wider recognition" category in Whack magazine. His smooth, soulful style has it's foundations in bebop and the blues, yet looks ahead to the avante-garde and beyond.

In addition to playing and teaching the guitar, Andrew enjoys painting and writing poetry. He is also the author of a guitar instructional book entitled "A practical approach to playing the guitar". Cheshire currently has five CD's to his credit, and can be heard as a sideman on several others. His critically acclaimed record "Another View" was voted top ten best CD of 1998 in Jazziz and Cadence magazines. In the review of Andrew's latest CD, Magic, Derek Taylor says of Andrew's playing: "crisply intoned single note runs blend with lubricious chords in a confluent combination guaranteed to pique the ears," and goes on to say that Andrew "stands poised to make an indelible mark on the canvas of improvised music."
