Joe Wulf

Swashbuckling trombonist Joe Wulf studied trombone at Cologne University's Jazz Seminar. His broad stylistic scope as musician and arranger places him among today's most interesting trombonists. His commitment to the preservation and continuation of the classic jazz stylistic directions is highly praiseworthy.

This red-blooded musician is very much in demand with an assortment of bands. His talent as a composer and arranger was first noticed in Rod Mason's Savannah Orchestra. Since then he has been among the top arrangers of the European jazz scene. In 1984 he joined the band of American saxophonist Pierre Paquette, and a year later became a member of Rod Mason's Hot Five. Joe Wulf also works as a studio musician, and is an instructor on the jazz faculty at the Cologne Music Academy; he is also a lecturer at the University of Bonn.

Joe Wulf was awarded the 1998 German Trade Media Prize for "Best trombonist and bandleader of the year." He has been fronting his own formation since 1992: Joe Wulf and The Gentlemen of Swing is a septet with an international lineup. Joe Wulf and His Orchestra is a more than competent big band for classic, swinging jazz. The nucleus of the Joe Wulf ensemble is the Californian drummer Will Linfors, saxophonists Hans Zähringer and Pierre Paquette, pianist Thilo Wagner, trumpeter Menno Daams, and Dizzy Gillespie's legendary bassist, Bert Thompson. With this high quality formation, Joe Wulf is able to realize his filigreed arrangements with apparent effortlessness, and present the public with the absolute pleasure of the Thirties and Forties Swing style.

Buddy DeFranco, Bob Bernard, Al Grey, Benny Waters, Red Holloway, Sir Roland Hanna, Jimmy Woode, Alvin Queen, Paul Kuhn, Bill Ramsey, Mr. Acker Bilk, Oscar Klein, Rod Mason, Chris Barber, and Dick Morgan are but a few of the high-powered performers with whom Joe Wulf is associated.

"Joe Wulf is a dynamic trombonist with a big sound out of the early days. He's a dedicated recreator of classic jazz, but his sound is never stale or recycled -- it's always fresh and new. And wow! This cat can really swing!" -- Robert Spencer, AAJ
