Huntsville, Alabama jazz musicians Ken and Harry Watters have signed with
Summit Records, and their first CD together, entitled "Brothers" will be
released internationally on March 9, 1999. This recording, made in New York
City, features Kenny Werner (piano), Scott Colley (acoustic bass), and Scott
Neumann (drums). "Brothers" contains originals as well as jazz standards
performed in a decidedly modern style.
Trumpeter Ken Watters received his musical training at Interlochen Arts
Academy, the University of North Texas, and Manhattan School of Music. He has
performed with Frank Sinatra, Steel Pulse, the Fifth Dimension, Mingus Big Band,
Eartha Kitt, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Petula Clarke, and a host of other headline artists
from around the globe.
Trombonist Harry Watters also received training at the University of North
Texas, as well as LSU, and the University of New Orleans, where he served as
teaching assistant to Ellis Marsalis. Harry has been the leader of the Dukes
of Dixieland, and has performed with Arturo Sandoval, Gladys Knight, Mickey
Finn, Denise Williams, Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, the Los Angeles Symphony
Orchestra, and many others. He is currently the jazz trombonist with the Army
Blues in Washington, DC.
After college, Ken and Harry pursued very different musical paths, with Ken
moving to New York to satisfy his love for the modern post-bop style of
playing, and Harry taking a position with the more traditional Dukes of
Dixieland in New Orleans. However, the desire to make a recording together
always remained strong through the years. The "Brothers" CD presents not only
a melding of two vastly different stylistic approaches, but a reunion of two
musicians who play together as only brothers can.
