Valarie Morris has been composing music for over 10 years and Reeding Between The Linesis her third CD. She writes for solo instruments and ensembles of all sizes. Morris' music is sold by Byron Hoyt Sheet Music in San Francisco and by the online JANPress. Five pieces from her TransFormations CD were played on NPR's "All Things Considered" in 1998. These and other selections from TransFormations have been played on radio stations in the U.S. and over 20 radio stations in France, Finland, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Romania, Lithuania, Russia, and Canada. Her works are performed frequently in the SF Bay Area, including the February 1999 performance by the Marin Symphony of her first orchestral work, Symphony of Light and Shadows.
Morris plays clarinet, saxophone, accordion, piano, and flute and performs frequently with large and small ensembles in the Bay Area. She enjoys playing and writing for music theatre and collaborating with choreographers.
Morris received her MA in Music Composition from Mills College, where she studied with Anthony Braxton and other contemporary composers. She is currently studying jazz improvisation with bassist Herbie Lewis. Morris teaches in classroom settings and privately.
