Eve Cornelious & Chip Crawford

Husband and wife teams are not a new phenomenon, however, the union of Chip Crawford and Eve Cornelious has been remarkably prosperous, as they have contributed to each other's music both technically and spiritually, attracting an increasing amount of attention along the way.

In 1992 and 1993, they individually won the North Carolina Jazz Composer's Fellowship award. Their debut release, "Faces of Eve," landed them an invitation to record with Norman Connors, as well as the re-release of one track on a compilation disc in England.

Eve Cornelious has enjoyed a remarkable career, touring Europe, Japan, and Cuba with Roy Hargrove, Jon Hendricks, Chucho Valdez, Mulgrew Miller, Carl Allen, Rodney Whitaker, Mark Whitfield, and Tim Warfield. She has peformed to critical acclaim at festivals around the world, including North Sea, Monterey, Montreaux, Newport, Middleheim, and the JVC Jazz Festival at Lincoln Center. She has recorded with Norman Conners and Ramsey Lewis.

Eve's education in music spans both the formal and the personal, with a degree in music to supplement her careful transcription work of vocal giants Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae and Billie Holiday. Born in Newark, NJ and raised in Newport News, VA, Eve feels a special kinship with Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, who came from those two towns respectively. Eve also studied with pianist Mary Lou Williams.

Chip Crawford began his career at Berklee College of Music in the early 70's and within a year found himself touring and recording with such music legends as the Four Tops and Isaac Hayes. In 1974, Chip formed the group Workshoppe which attracted the attention of Weather Report founder and producer Joe Zawinul.

His association with jazz giants continued through the next two decades, as he worked extensively with Donald Byrd and performed with Jimmy Heath, Herbie Hancock, Slide Hampton, Houston Person, and Harold Vick. He has also been a longstanding arranger for Miles Davis' legendary producer Teo Macero.

A well respected educator, Chip received a Masters in Music in 1991 and currently teaches at Duke University, North Carolina Central University, and Shepard Magnet School.
