Until just 18 months ago, you would hear me say "wine is red my friend,
that's it!". Well, thanks to a good friend who's been kind to share his
passion and knowledge, I have now discovered another universe of mysterious
goodies. Here are some worth checking out:
Sylex 95 by Didier Dagueneau, (Poully Fum) Loire.
I don't know enough about wines to try to describe this enjoyable combo of
fruits, acidity, oak...I'll stop! But I can tell you it's one of the best
Loire wines you will ever taste. Goes best with Art Tatum: any solo recording.
Les terraces du Palat 95, by Franois Villard, Condrieu.
I was mostly impressed by Mr. Villard' s wines, perhaps because I had a
tasting at the chateau. Mr. Villard who's about my age, talked about his
work with great devotion and passion. He then came to my concert in Vienne
the next day. This wine is delicious. You should also taste the St. Joseph
red. Goes best with Bill Evans: Paris concert Vol.1.
Chablis Grenouilles 95 by Jadot.
I remember while we were on tour last October, on a day off with a five or six
hour train ride in front of us. Ten minutes before departure, I picked up a
chilled bottle of this wine and shared it with the band. It's a great, light
Chablis. Perfect for the occasion. Goes best with Thelonious Monk: Monk plays Duke.
Chateau La Louviere (white) 86, Pessac Lognan.
I would not touch anything five years or younger. This white Bordeaux is to me
one of finest from that region. Perfectly balances with some fruit, easy on
oak, very nice with fish. They also make a very fine red. Goes best with Keith Jarrett:
Changeless.
Chateau Suduiraut 83, Sauternes.
I had some, six bottles...... all gone. I love this Sauternes with a light
desert, looking at this liquid gold is a treat, perfect balance. A far
better buy than Yquem for my money! Goes best with Glen Gould: JS Bach's Goldberg
Variations.
