The Making of A Jazz CD: Sequencing and Mastering

With the mixes completed, the challenge became putting the tunes into an
order on the CD that flows naturally and makes sense. This is very
important--for, as in life, the right thing at the wrong time does not
work. I made several different sequences, then listened and thought
about them to see what felt right. I got lots of feedback form everyone,
and finally came up with an order. JR Rich, the head of publicity was
very helpful with her observations about what would work. I finally
decided on the following order:

Roll Call (Interlude)
- One Turnip Green

- Mobius 3
- Soup Bone
- Soul Eyes

Last Call (Interlude)
Mastering is the last process that occurs before the tape is sent to the
manufacturer for duplication. In this process, the overall equalization
of the recording is determined and levels boosted. The mastering
engineer makes sure that the levels are consistent from song to song and
EQ's the recording so that it will sound good on the widest range of
equipment: from a TV speaker to a huge home theater system. Michael
Dreyer was the engineer, and he did a great job. I really wanted all of
the tracks to "jump out" at you, and he helped me to achieve that
result. Mastering is also the phase were you decide how much blank
space should exist between each tune, and make any final adjustments to
fade-outs.
The next step was to begin the process of designing a cover and
developing liner notes for the recording.
