Happy Holidays From Berklee College
By Charles H. Chapman
Victor Prieto from Orense, Spain, is a 7th semester student and Berklee
College of Music's only accordion major. He recently won the Concorso
Internazionale competition (the Super Bowl of Accordion) in the jazz category. The competition was held October 10-14 in Ancona, Italy. Victor studies with Associate Professor of Piano Joanne Brackeen at Berklee and has developed a new technique for playing jazz on the accordion.
Renowned bassist and Berklee alum Abe Laboriel, Sr. (Class of '72) came to Berklee last month for a week as the second Herb Alpert Visiting Professor. (Pianist/composer Alan Broadbent, who was the first, was here for a week last year, and will come back this year and next ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂthe tenure is 3 years, with the various Herb Alpert Professors overlapping.) Abe taught bass labs, clinics, and ensembles, and performed in concert, alongside his son Mateo, who's a current Berklee guitar student. Abe Laboriel, Jr., who graduated from Berklee in 1993, is the current drummer for Sting and performed with Paul McCartney in The Concert for New York City, which was broadcast live on Saturday, Oct. 20 on VH1, AOL, Miramax, and Cablevision.
On December 10th, the Boston Jazz Repertory Orchestra will perform at Tremont Theatre in downtown Boston. This is the resident musical ensemble of International Society and the Tremont Theater. International Society's mission is to provide opportunities for diverse artists and humanists to share their work with the community; to promote understanding and appreciation of cultural differences through multicultural, multidisciplinary programming and education; and to create an environment for ethnically and culturally diverse visual and performing artists to interact, exchange ideas and experiences. Current members of the Boston Jazz Repertory Orchestra are:
- Billy Thompson (Berklee faculty) & Allan Chase - alto saxophones
- Bill Pierce (Berklee faculty) & Jason Hunter - tenor saxophones
- Carl Atkins - baritone saxophone
- Rick Hammet, Phil Grenadier, Tim Cote, & Taylor Ho Bynum - trumpets
- Jeff Galindo (Berklee faculty), Larry McClellan (Berklee faculty), & Russell
Jewell - trombones
- Bill Lowe - bass trombone & tuba
- Frank Wilkins (Berklee faculty) - piano
- Ron Mahdi (Berklee faculty) - bass
- Luther Gray - drums
Both of Berklee's top student big bands will perform concerts in December. On Tuesday, December 11th, Phil Wilson and the Berklee Rainbow Band, featuring some of the college's top student instrumentalists, vocalists, and arrangers, will present an evening of great music at the Berklee Performance Center, as the band prepares for its trip to Long Beach, CA, in January. The Rainbow Band has been invited to play at the IAJE Conference 2002. The December 11 concert will feature vocalist Alisa Miles and trumpeter/vocalist Christine Fawson, as well as composer Nicolas Sorin. Wilson has led the band for over 35 years. Berklee alums who played with the band when they were students include Cyrus Chestnut, John Scofield, Roy Hargrove, and Terri Lyne Carrington.
And on Thursday December 13th the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra under the
direction of Greg Hopkins will perform at the Berklee Performance Center.
This is also an amazing student jazz orchestra, with players from all over the
world performing fabulous student compositions. Tickets for each concert are only $5.00 ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ $2.00 for seniors. For information, contact the Performance Center box office at 617-747-2261.
May the holidays be peaceful and music be plentiful for all the wonderful All About Jazz readers. Thanks for another great year.
