Carol Kaye Pays Berklee A Visit

By Charles H. Chapman

On Thursday, October 19, 2000, Berklee College of Music presented the first scholarship in its history awarded specifically to an outstanding female Instrumentalist. The Terri Lyne Carrington Endowed Scholarship, named for the drummer and 1983 Berklee graduate, was awarded this year to pianist and Performance major Daniela Schachter'02 of Messina, Italy. The annual scholarship was established this year through a major gift from Craigie Zildjian, Berklee Trustee and CEO of the Avedis Zildjian Company, which Terri Lyne has endorsed since age 12.

On Monday October 23 legendary studio bassist Carol Kaye visited the college for the Bass Department's weeklong Bass Dayze Kaye is the most recorded musician of all time, with over 10,000 sessions spanning four decades. Kaye discussed her remarkable career in a Women in Music lecture followed by an electric bass clinic to a packed hall filled with eager students and faculty. She opened the first lecture performing a tune with faculty guitarist Charles Chapman and surprised everyone by opening the second lecture on guitar, performing a dynamite version of There Will Never Be Another You with Bass Department assistant chair John Repucci. That evening the Bass Department honored her with a concert in the Berklee Performance Center featuring bass instructors, Danny Morris, Jim Stinnett and Bruce Gertz. Carol also performed three tunes with two world-renowned faculty members—guitarist Mick Goodrick and drummer Joe Hunt.

Also during Bass Dayze, on Tuesday, October 24, the Bass and General Education departments hosted jazz writer Gene Santoro, who read from his new book Myself When I Am Real: The Life and Music of Charles Mingus published by Oxford University Press.

On October 26, Berklee’s Film Scoring Department presented a Master Class, part of its annual BMI Day, by film composer Basil Poledouris. Mr. Poledouris received an Emmy Award for Best Score for the 8-hour mini-series "Lonesome Dove" and composed the score for the recent Sharon Stone TV-movie If These Wall Could Talk II, as well as numerous feature films, including The Hunt for Red October, Les Miserables, Starship Troopers, Robocop 1 & 2, and the John Waters' films Cecil B. DeMented and "Serial Mom." In 1996, Mr.Poledouris composed the music for the opening ceremony of the Atlanta Olympic Games. Prior to Mr.Poledouris'lecture, Doreen Ringer-Ross of BMI presented the annual BMI Scholarship to Berklee Film Scoring student Tiffany White '01.

On Monday, November 6, 2000 Berklee College of Music spotlights its Brass and Woodwind departments in Windsday 2000. The all-day event includes clinics and performances by faculty, students, and guest artists, trumpeter Darren Barrett and saxophonist Mark Turner. Mexican composer and saxophonist Rodolfo "Popo" Sanchez, visiting as part of Berklee1s first-ever Latin Culture Week, will also participate in the Windsday 2000 activities with an afternoon saxophone clinic. The days events culminate in a concert featuring Barrett and Turner at 8:15 p.m. in the Berklee Performance Center.

Two very interesting projects just crossed my desk which are not traditional jazz, but definite projects of merit. The video Buddy Emmons Live-1977 and CD by the same name was just released. They were produced and featured faculty guitarist Mike Ihde and alumni Jamie Glasier (LA studio ace and Jon Luc Ponti sideman). The concert was originally filmed in 1977 and is a gem featuring the talents of the great pedal steel guitarist Buddy Emmons. Emmons improvisational solos would delight any jazz aficionado. You’ve got to hear it to believe it. For information contact; thephotodoctor@mediaone.net

The second is Power Trio Live featuring faculty guitarist Johnny DeFrancesco. This is an energy driven live album that is a lot more than the standard blues and is definitely worth a listen: www.horseplaymusic.com.

These are just a few of the many fascinating musical events happening here at the college as 2000 draws very quickly to a close.
