"Listen Up!..I've heard it said..and I
also read that music hath charm to soothe the savage beast..but it seems to
me the so-called music of today agitates the savage beast..to say the
least..now what I'd like to know where did the music go..what happend to Moon
& June..to harmony and melody..to singers who sing on key..and eighteen cats
playin' together musically..well, let me hip you to the fact..good music is
where it's at..and it feels right at home..as sit always has..in JAZZ..case
in point..CHARLIE PARKER...Man, you ain't never heard anybody play like
him..Jim!..he was the "Bird"..soaring with grace along his own musical flight
path..withstanding the wrath of those who didn't dig his playing..but I'm
saying Diz and Monk had eyes..'cause they realized "Bird" was a phenom..an
icon..a cat who actually in reality..rejected the accepted language of
Jazz..it wasn't for the barrooms or for dancers only..it was a music to be
listened to..and he knew it would be difficult to do..but he blew!..and with
cats like Monk..Diz..Max and Miles hangin' on.."Bird" came on strong..they
all watched him soar..looking for more musical challenges..the demons and
fears were always around..trying to keep him down..but "Bird" played in spite
of adversity..and always painted a musical masterpiece. "Bird" died at age
34..and just how much more music did he have left in him..nobody knows..so to
close..I'd like to reiterate..and set the record straight.."Bird Lives,
Man"..(later for Elvis).."Bird Lives"
