A Love Supreme: Ian's Guide To The Ecstatic Spirit In Jazz by Ian Scott Horst
|
In his last few years, John Coltrane's jazz moved from being a form of
entertainment to a form of deep spiritual expression, as he sought to
communicate a message beyond words. After his death in 1967, his widow Alice
Coltrane, his collaborator Pharoah Sanders, and a host of others including
Leon Thomas and Lonnie Liston Smith incorporated Coltrane's musical ideas
plus Eastern and African religious and musical elements to create a new
cosmic kind of jazz. This website features essays, photos and discographies
on jazz as a spiritual medium.
