Album Description

Peter H. Bloom, multiple flutes, and Mary Jane Rupert, piano and harp, who tour the globe as the Duo “2” are featured on the CD Butterfly Effects and Other Works by Elizabeth Vercoe (Navona Records NV6196). The title track, “Butterfly Effects,” called "stunningly beautiful" (Cinemusical), is a suite of seven contrasting movements for C flute, alto flute, bass flute, piccolo and concert harp. The piece was written for “2” and received its premiere during their concert tour of Thailand (January 2009). The composition was later published by Noteworthy Sheet Music. (The sheet music was reviewed by Nicole Riner in Flutist Quarterly Fall 2015: “an artful exploration of all that the instruments can do and a wonderful addition to the modern chamber musician’s library”). Bloom and Rupert are also featured (on multiple flutes and piano) with mezzo-soprano D’Anna Fortunato in the CD’s second major suite, “This is my letter to the World,” from poems by Emily Dickinson. Both of the magnificent suites showcase the musicians’ close ensemble playing, technical mastery, and facility across multiple styles. Elizabeth Vercoe, a prolific composer for mixed chamber ensembles, has been praised by The Washington Post as “one of the most inventive composers working in America today.”
